If you get an accent…
I suggest it be French.
A French accent chair that is.
My favorite French accent chair is a bergère chair.
Comfort & style collide in this chair. Relaxed elegance come to mind.
A bergère chair is an enclosed upholstered French armchair with an upholstered back and armrests on an upholstered frame.
The seat frame is over-upholstered, but the rest of the wooden framing is exposed.
A bergère is fitted with a loose, but tailored, seat cushion. It is designed for lounging in comfort with a deep, wide seat.
As you can see, everyone feels right at home on a bergére.
Bergére literally means shepherdess. The name likely stems from the pastoral scenes depicted on the upholstery of such chairs in the 1700s. Maybe Emmett is looking for the sheep too!
Today on Decorating Tips & Tricks, the podcast, we are talking all about accent chairs, French & otherwise.

Ok, let’s get back to my bergére chairs…
So I was trolling my favorite thrift store when these beauties darkened the doorway.
“Of all the thrift joints in all the towns, in all the world they were carried into mine”.
And I was instantly swept away. The curves, the lines, the patina ~ like none other.
I could see past the dated fabric to the possibility of them dressed in Belgian linen. ( You know the difference Belgian linen can make thanks to this post). A beauty in a old tawdry dress is still a beauty after all.
So I made this pair my own & dressed them in nubby neutral linen. Lookin’ mighty fine these days.
Here is a new Bergére chair that looks pretty darn good for the price.
If you fancy a French accent chair like mine you can find them new already decked in linen or head to your favorite thrift joint and listen for a French accent.

I love the chair. I picked up something similar at Restore and going to paint and have been trying to decide what to recover it in. Love the linen.
Thanks
REALLY pretty chairs, Kelly! Great job on the re-do! I have a Restore about 20 mins away. I REALLY need to go check it out. Also, going to check out the Restoration Hardware sales/outlets.
Have a great day!
BTW, when you reply to a comment, is there a way we can get notified through email? (Your last reply, I didn’t get notification… I just checked myself.)
Thank you Julie!! Oh yes, you should check out the Restoration Outlet/Warehouse sales. I don’t think I have the response to emails turned on. I will double check.
Love these chairs. I have my eye on some.
Cindy
Oh do tell Cindy – which ones!
Hi Kelly,
Beautiful chair!
Also want to add that I just listened to the podcast on What to Splurge On, and I agree with all three of you on the splurges mentioned. Thank you for also approaching my question when discussing wood moldings, bead board, etc. I agree that quality is always worth the cost!
Hey Sandi! Thanks for coming by & for listening!
Ohhhh those chairs.
You lucky girl. Jealous!
Was really lucky Nancy! Timing is everything as they say! Thanks for coming by!
Thanks for the French lesson!
My pleasure mon ami !
