Tethered to a wire on the edge of abyss.
Both scared but knowing it was inevitable.
Hoping for just a little more time.
I looked over, she appeared smaller than lately in the borrowed rain slicker & goofy orange helmet.
Her long legs braced against the wooden scaffolding, the only sign of how big she has gotten.
Our eyes met. We heard “1, 2, 3 GO“….”stay with me, she said.”
Before I could answer, she shifted her feet & was off ~ out over the grey unknown, destination unclear.
In that instant, I forgot everything the guide had told us as I watched her glide forward.
Snapped back to reality with the words “GO KELLY!”
Off I went to catch up. Side by side we sailed high above the tree tops through the pelting rain.
Those 3 minutes dangling from wires capsulized what is to come…
Right next to her, but each on our own line ~ our own course.
I couldn’t touch her, couldn’t change it, couldn’t stop it…but she knew I was there.
We stole some giggles & gulps of wind as we caught glimpses of what we were actually doing.
A blur of green below, mist all around shrouding us in a cloud.
Then the wooden platform came into view.
Ava began the motions we were told to make to land safely ~ turns out she had been listening. I copied her movements.
We landed safely, together, but apart. Seems that will be the way it goes.
Free from the harness, helmet sliding off, Ava hugged me & said “thanks for staying with me“.
I got to answer this time. “No place else I will ever be.“
*** Ava & I braved the highest, longest zip line in Maui in wind & side ways rain. She just began high school and I…I, will be with her forever.
**** This story and analogy has been bubbling to the surface, so I had to share it with you ~ back to regularly scheduled DIYs & such on Wednesday.
xx Kelly xx
