So I was hosting a breakfast meeting the other day as I mentioned.
The ladies gathered in my living room with the wonky candelabra and other things I love.
As I sat there, in a spot I never sit in…
I was trying my best to pay attention, but kept thinking “the light is really good this morning for photos”.
“Wonder if the light will be as good ever again…”
I had to shoo those blogger thoughts out of my head fast & say some stuff during the meeting…
So I did, the ladies left and the good light was gone with them. Like the tide on the shore. To return, but not for awhile.
It was back today at the very same time and it was as good – Southern California light is predictable that way I guess.
So out came the camera & tri-pod. No fancy lens yet, as I am waiting to treat myself, but the light was lovely, so I snapped away.
As every room in my house, as am I myself, my living room is a work in progress constantly evolving.
It is a long room with a very high beamed ceiling. So I have the furniture pulled in, away from the walls to make it more intimate.
It has two accent walls painted Marblehead Gold. It is a warm elegant yellow that I love.
The room has layers & I want more layers – layers of things I love.
Layers take a room from furnished to decorated. Layers of things you love, make that decorated room yours.
I want to add a rug under the thrift store coffee table I sprayed silver.
It is huge in size. It’s size brings together the sofa, love seat & ottoman, but it needs something fabulous underneath. Another layer…
I am considering an animal skin rug in whites & tans, but not sure how I feel about that.
It is nice hanging out in here with you.
Want to play a decorating game?
1. Can you pick out the one thing (there is only one ) I don’t really like in the room? Hint – it is a space filler until I find the perfect something.
2. Can you find the three things from Ballard Designs in the room?
3. Can you figure out what I want to change, but haven’t because it is /they are so soft?
Looking forward to your answers!
In the meantime, I’ll just straighten these candles…

Kelly, I love what you said about layers of things you love make a room yours. I couldn’t agree more. Your room is so intimate and inviting.
Okay…Ballard’s items.. totally guessing 1) lantern sconce 2) mercury table lamp 3) mirrors behind the sofa table
Items you want to change but haven’t because they’re soft: the throw pillows??
And I have no idea what is being used as filler. Whatever it is, it is pretty!
p.s. my thoughts would have been wandering towards the perfect light too. 🙂
Thanks so much Sharon! Yes, the plight of a blogger getting perfect light!
Hope to see you at Haven…
Oh, and I forgot to mention that I LOVE the pictures in your gallery wall.
Thanks again Sharon! It is a collection of small to mid sized landscapes. In looking at the photos, I see they are not all spaced perfectly…makes it more “natural” gonna go with that rather than make more holes. 🙂
Your living room is lovely! I so much enjoyed looking at each and every detail shown in your pictures. I am only home for the good light on the weekends and when I see it, I also want to run to get my camera!
I really appreciate that Paula! You do very well capturing the weekend light for sure!
your home is lovely! u love a gallery wall and the light is fab and like that always in Socal no?
Is the one thing you use as a space filler the big vase with twigs? Cant see any other space fiillers!
Dont know Ballards so I couldnt say1
I am stumped on No 3 – sorry!
Naomi thank you! The light is always lovely her win general. It is how it strikes a room that is tricky! Better than the ‘light’ in Copenhagen for sure!!

TOSS PILLLOWS
hmmm…a bit of that answer. Thanks for playing!
Such a quaint house. Great use of textures and color combos. The way it’s decorated gives the illusion of more space. Bravo love it
Thank you Jeannie!
I don’t know what you don’t like in your stunning living room, but I’m loving the white candelabra!!
I have experienced the urge to get up and move or straighten something when I’m to be focusing on a conversation, so I had to laugh about your comment of wanting to capture photos when the light was perfect.
Mary Alice
“Stunning”!! This is why I love you Mary Alice. You always make me feel good!! I LOVE my candelabra too. Just scooped it up at an estate sale. It is heavy & was very hard to carry around while rummaging the rest of the sale, but it was worth the effort. I need to get a supply of that waxy stuff that holds loose candles in place. On the list!
what a lovely home you have created! will try to answer two of your questions – the too soft must the throw, looks pretty cozy to me. while everything looks like it should live right where it does, is the space filler the suitcase? thanks for sharing and we are envious of your warm sunshine. we have sunshine this morning but a wind chill of 13 degrees below zero…
Sending my throw to you to Kathi at 13 below you need it more than us!! Thanks so much for coming by & of your comment. Stay warm!!
Hi Kelly. Your living room is lovely and, to me, very Californian. 🙂 I have no idea what Ballard designs is, (Lol, I’m such a Philistine), but, at the risk of making a huge mistake and having you never speak to me again, I would venture to say that the black-ish urn int eh corner holding the curled twigs is the thing you think has to go. Probably just as well too as upright bundled twigs indoors are bad Feng Shui. I completely understand the need to take a photo in the light right away. Most people know me and put up with that aspect of my nature, (mainly because I sell photos thru stock agencies and they know it), but I know it’s hard in a formal business meeting. At home I tend to have about four cameras around the house and everyone who is over is very welcome to pick one up and photograph something. Some people do and some are too worried about it to do it, but it’s fascinating for me to see what others see and I love looking at the resulting photos.
Veronica….thank you! Very “Californian” I like that! I know I would love to hang around our house snapping photos & drinking tea. It is so interesting to see what others see, isn’t it. With this game I am seeing the room in all different ways. And as I have said before, we are kindred.
Perfectly said. “Layers you love.” I couldn’t agree more.
Thanks Ann…xx
What a lovely space! Thank you for sharing it with us!
Thank you Angela! I really appreciate that. Have a great day!!
Your living room is so warm and inviting. It was great to see all of the details but I’d love to see some overall shots so we can understand the room’s layout. Beautiful wall of art!
– Alma, The Tablescaper
Good point Alma! I am on it. This is where a fancy lens would come in handy. Might have to treat myself sooner than later! For now, the flyer leads to the arched doorway by the rattan chair & dark wood buffet. The sofa is to the right, the love seat to the left. Fireplace at the opposite end. French doors lead to the family room. Thank you!
Kelly,
All the layers and accessories are just beautiful! I am drooling over that awesome pillow!! ~Christy
My daughter gave me that one Christmas before last. Great taste for a then 10 & 12 year old! Thanks Christy!!
I don’t know about anything you wouldn’t like but I sure would love some of that Southern California light! Hopefully my Southern Georgia light lights up my living room this way. And maybe once I get in there and finish decorating it, I can take some pictures and find out! 🙂
Jamie I am shining my light on you!! Where are you in GA? My parents are outside of Greensboro. Decorating is never finished, snap away!
Thanks for visiting!
Kelly – the room is beautiful! Pinned!
I already knew your home was beautiful…so, 1. I think the thing you want to get rid of is the rattan chair beside the ornate cabinet. 2. The three Ballard Design things are 1-the large mirror behind the sofa 2-the mirror with the outer sections 3-the large urn in the corner 3-The soft things you would like to replace are the sofa cushions. This was fun, thanks for inviting me to play!
“Pinned” the highest of compliments!! Thank you Doreen!
Odessa I am thrilled you are here!!! Thank you!
I love the wonky candelabra!!
isn’t it awesome! Thank you Sandra…
Gorgeous living room Kelly! I love all of the details and layers you added! Your space has a curated look which I love! I think a hide under your coffee table would look fantastic! Layering hides on area rugs is a very current look! Thanks for sharing your home with us!
Wow…thank so much Heather! I appreciate your kind words & your positive input on the “hide’ layer. Lmk if you stumble across any good ones, ok?
I love the golds! And the layers. You are also very funny!
Thank you Eva! Glad you think so on all counts!
Your home is beautiful Kelly! I love all of your layers, textures, and colors. It looks so curated and loved. Can’t wait to follow your blog!
Thank you Kathy! What a wonderful compliment! You are going to follow my blog? Wonderful! Welcome to My Soulful Home!!!
Kelly this room is BEAUTIFUL!! I had to laugh when you said you had to focus on your meeting and not on capturing the room in perfect light…I’ve been known to find myself “unfocused” when something strikes the eye lol!! I’m also a little crazy with fluffing the pillows when people leave the room!
