Like the first time a little kid sees their teacher at the supermarket – seeing things in a different light can be mind blowing!
Everything isn’t always as it seems ( she eats too? with who? where? ). Looking at things differently challenges our notions and broadens our minds.
Deep thoughts for a post on ‘succulents in a sifter’!
While I don’t put this project in the “my teacher is coming down the supermarket aisle” mind blowing category, I do think even the simplest re-purpose challenges our minds & creativity. I believe those to be the real reasons we all enjoy a re-purpose so much.
Take something, turn it on its head & make something else. Challenging, creative & really fun.
So that is what I did with this vintage sifter I picked up at a yard sale.
It was sitting in the cabinet next to the other sifter I use. I don’t need two sifters, but I do need more charming places to plant succulents.
You know I have a bit of an obsession with these hardy little gems.
The sifter is the perfect container. A good size, with superior drainage.
I added a layer of pebbles for good measure, sandy soil, the plants & some moss.
Love my new succulent planter and found a perfect spot for it.
Go through your cabinets I bet you have an extra sifter too!
What have you looked at in a different light & re-purposed?

That’s fantastic Kelly! I also have a bit of an obsession with succulents. (Even smuggled a bit of a broken sidewalk jade plant back to BC from San Francisco…how bad was that?) You know, My grandfather and I used to go to the botanical gardens in Prague and never got out of the cacti selection and I’m afraid I love them now too. 🙂
Not bad at all that you saved that jade plant from death by foot traffic! xx
That is so darn cute! I just picked up an old sifter at a yard sale. I think I need to go get some succulents. I hope you come share at our garden party!
Oh yes do! I will come by…thank you!
Love your idea for planting succulents. I’m always planting outside the pot 🙂
“Outside the pot” I love that! Thanks Linda!
Kelly, so creative. I love the sifter for a little succulent planter. They look right at home! Great idea, my friend!
Thanks Yvonne! xx
You know I love all the repurposing going on over there – so cute! I have a sifter like that somewhere… My challenge would be then keeping it alive 🙂
Well u know I can help with that…! 🙂
Hi Kelly, I love it! What a darling idea! Can’t wait to get our reno’s done so I can start doing some fun stuff like this! Thank you for sharing!

Definitely down on the list when you are in the midst of a renovation! But a fun little project when you have some time after the big work is done. Thanks fro coming by Lisa!
Such a nice idea! I love succulents, brings back memories of my childhood (my mother had a huge collection of them). Thanks for sharing 🙂
Your mom was ahead of her time! Now succulents are all the rage!
Do you line the bottom of the sifter with anything to keep the dirt from falling onto your shelf? Or do you start with plain ol’ rocks?
Hey Michelle! Thanks for coming by & for your question. Plain old rocks, well pebbles to be exact. When I water it, which is rarely, I give it a good drink & let it sit in the sink for an hour or so before putting back on the shelf. Always fully drained by then. Hope that helps and that I see you here again soon!!
I absolutely love this!it is such a great idea. I have been looking for ideas for a succulent garden and this is perfect!
Thanks Alayna! Succulents are so hardy you can stick them in almost anything – just not too much water and they will thrive!
Wow this is an awesome idea!! 🙂
