In the kitchen cutting up a watermelon when I hear it….
The splashing, the giggles, calls of “Marco Polo“.
“Let’s play mermaids“. “Yes let’s! ”
“I’m Serena the purple one“. “I’m the pink one!”
Melon sliced and on a platter, I head out the kitchen door.
Their voices fill the warm summertime air, making everything sparkle a bit brighter. When the day is done, waterlogged and tired I wrap them in towels warmed by the sun.
A few years later now, the games have changed. Music from a iPhone has replaced the Disney sound tracks.
The voices are more muffled & talk of movie stars has edged out the mermaid chatter. They are lounging in the sun with Teen Vogue & Girl’s Life magazines open on their towels.
It is real hot. Barefoot, I am cutting up another watermelon.
Remembering the shouts, giggles and mermaid games. The matching Tinkerbell bathing suits and wrapping them up tight in warm towels when the games were done.
…I think a few salty drops may have fallen onto the melon.
As I turn to carry it out, I hear it…
First a BIG splash ~ then a loud giggle ~ then “you want to be the pink one this time?”
Summer 2014 at My Soulful Home. Like the Summers before, the mermaids have come out to play!
So things do change, but maybe not that much when you really listen.
At the heart of it, I think my girls will always be mermaids ~ maybe we all are, at least in the summertime.
If so, “can I be the green one?”
This is what summer is like at My Soulful Home, then & still now.
What is summer like at your house? Let us know in a comment. Then visit the other blogs on our Summer at Home tour. Each one has a story, a taste, a sense of summer to share. I know you will enjoy every post.
(oh, you will enjoy this too – if summer has a taste at MSH it is my Summer Pasta Salad. I have made countless bowls & they always want more! Mermaids love pasta & bacon! )
