We made a special discovery this summer...so I want to share it with you.The hum of thousands of bees at work was the first sign we were in a special place.lavender close upThen came the peaceful scent of the fragrant lavender.Turning to take in all the fields, we gasped with delight at the view down the slope to the sea.Alii viewAfter exploring, the taste of warm lavender scones from the farm kitchen more than satisfied.sconegoodVisiting Ali'i Kula Lavender Farm on the slopes of Haleakala crater was one of the highlights of our summer trip to Maui.  During our visit all the lavender was in bloom.  The feeling that we were in a special place was palpable even before we learned of the Farm's mission.Ok, I am going to get a little Zen now...buddhaAli'i Kula Lavender Farm's  (AKL) mission is to spread "sustainable aloha".  Living a lifestyle through aloha (love) ~ aloha means many things in Hawaiian~ that builds stronger people, families, communities and a stronger planet.  AKL seeks to preserve the connection between humans & nature through actions guided to nurture a healthy planet & healthy people for generations to come.  Who can argue with that?.... And, did I mention they make the best scones I have ever ever tasted?I am totally into "sustaining my aloha", aren't you?AKLA few other facts of note about AKL you might like to know. The farm is 13.5 acres in size, has 55,000 lavender plants among other lovely plantings and there are 45 different varieties of lavender on the grounds. This is my favorite fact, they have no irrigation.  The lavender just loves the climate. Getting the water it needs from "sipping" the moisture from the mist that settles over the mountains in the late afternoon & the rare rainfall.lots of lavenderIf you find yourself in Maui do visit AKL.  If a trip is not in your near future you can visit the AKL website.  All the products (including the scone mix!) are available there. We bought several packages & will be making batches throughout the year. Here's to "sustaining aloha" & making new discoveries everyday! What discovery did you make this summer?** Kelly **
