Chesterfield Sofa - history, design & choices
Something very exciting is happening soon-ish...
Can't mention it yet ( I despise when people, tell you there is something exciting, but then leave you hanging... )
Why am I doing that then?
Because I am busting to tell you - so I am sorta telling you!!
I can tell you this ~ for this thing that is happening…I need a Chesterfield sofa.
Why a Chesterfield sofa, you ask? Don't try to trick me!
For now, let's just focus on the sofa in question…in need.
Saying "Chesterfield sofa" in my head & out loud…made me wonder...
What's with the name & what makes a Chesterfield a true Chesterfield?
I found out.

Chesterfield Sofa - what's in the name and design
A Chesterfield can be called the “Mother of all Sofas” based on tradition, elegance & comfort.
The name Chesterfield stems from the fact that the 4th Earl of Chesterfield commissioned the first such sofa. As he was a man of great taste, social standing and elegance, anyone who was anyone in the early 19th century wanted one for their drawing room.
Besides great style, Chesterfield sofas are remarkably comfortable. Traditionally made with premier leather, the other hallmarks of this style are:
- buttoned backs and arms
- cushioned seat
- low-seat base
- rounded arms
- the back generally low & even with the arms
Today's Chesterfields are made with materials other than leather. Some are very traditional while others only inspired by the style. I want an upholstered one in a heavy linen
I love the look. Now that my girls are older, I am not so concerned about goldfish cracker crumbs getting caught in the tufts. So let's pick one out shall we?!
Before you scroll down for the brands & prices…pick the one you like the best 1 - 4 in order. I pick #3.
1. Fleming & Howland - Stamford $2,990
2. Restoration Hardware - Kensington $3820 - $4925
3. Home Decorators - Gordon $1,199
4. Pottery Barn - Chesterfield $1,889 - $2,879 on sale
This never happens! I never pick the less expensive model. Now I haven't seen #3 in person, but the reviews are good. Some question about the linen color, so maybe get a swatch. My second choice is #2, but I really do like the nail heads on #3.
As soon as I can tell you why I need a Chesterfield I will. I promise!
Tell my your favorite of these four.
