Christmas Comfort Decorating

Like slipping on your favorite sweats, the traditional Christmas colors of red & green are oh, so comfortable. Combine comfort and a nod to nature and you have the combination we all need this year.

You are going to feast on inspiration for adding nature, beauty & comfort to your holiday decor today, as I am joining six creative women in sharing our holiday homes. Thanks to Annie of Most Lovely Things for organizing this wonderful tour. Links to the six posts are below so be sure to visit!

When I pulled out my “red” bin filled with boxes of shiny brites, plaid stadium blankets, my grandma’s flannel Santa bag and foraged pinecones, I knew going traditional was the way for me to decorate for Christmas this year. The deeply familiar in a very unfamiliar year.

Taking inspiration from the colors of the season and adding natural elements is making our house so cozy and yes, comfortable. I can’t wait to get the tree on Saturday so I can deck it with all our family ornaments - the more macaroni ornaments the better!

For now, let’s have a look around the dining room dressed for the season. As this room is front and center in our 1886 Victorian, I like to have a big statement on the table at all times.

For Christmas 2020 it is potted pine tree in a sap bucket that I have had for many years.

It sits on an ironstone platter surrounded by big pinecones I have collected on many walks. I tossed on one of the stadium blankets as a makeshift tablecloth. Tip: When you have a table cloth that is too small for the table position it on an angle.

Opposite the antique breakfront on the other side of the table is a very tall roll top secretary with glass cabinet on top. It was stained a dark red. I opted to paint it white.

On the key hangs a mini boxwood wreath & silhouette. For Christmas I added a tiny grain sack stocking. Tip: mix brown wood furniture with some painted pieces for a collected look.

I adore preserved boxwood wreaths. I got mine HERE. This one is hanging on a very patina’ed bird cage that I carried home from the east coast on my lap. The flight attendant was very kind to let me as it didn’t fit under the seat.

My grandma Sally hung this Santa bag from her newel post. In it she stored the hundreds of Christmas cards she received each year. It feels nice to have her Santa hanging around my house this year.

As I mentioned, we will get our tree on Saturday. We tried a faux tree a few years ago, but returned to a real one for our family tree.

Where do you stand on the tree debate? LISTEN in to my podcast episode on just this topic. Learn the pros & cons of both ( several you probably never considered ) and learn what to look for with either choice. And as always, have a few laughs with us. Click HERE to listen.

However you choose to decorate this year - to the max or taking a pass - I wish you a healthy, happy and oh, so comfy holiday and ALL the very best for 2021!
