My first kitchen essential is really more an essential not to have.

We all love decorative items, like table lamps and art in a kitchen to make it feel more like a gathering place, than a utilitarian room.  It is the hub of most homes, so why not treat it like any other room?

Cookbooks are a logical item in a kitchen but don't just pile them up in a cabinet or tossed on a shelf.  Use them for recipes and for decor.

These are a few of my favorites:

A vintage volume of Mastering the Art of French Cooking by none other than Julia Child.

Barefoot Contesssa Family Style by Ina Garten

The Foothills Cuisine of Blackberry Farm by Sam Beall & Marah Stets

While we are on the subject of food, my kitchen, well more so the meals I prepare in my kitchen, feel incomplete without a sprinkling of my favorite sea salt.  

It is called Maldon.
