Make a Burlap Chandelier Canopy

Sometimes a project just takes waaaay longer than it should.

My chandelier canopy project is one such project.

I bought a rusty, chippy, vintage chandelier about 1 year ago - yes, I said a YEAR ago.

Remember that day trip across town I shared with you?  I scored it that day.

Home & ready hang, I realized it had no canopy.

Darn it!

The canopy is the part that attaches to the ceiling, the wires go through it & it covers the hole.

There was just a chain & wire.

There was a long hmmmmm???? in my head as I contemplated what to do.

Searching high & low for a vintage canopy, a vintage looking canopy, a canopy I could make look vintage - I came up with zilch.

I had to get crafty & creative - well ok, I like a challenge.

Checked the odds & ends I had on hand - came up with a pipe fitting that I found while digging in the garden. The wires could go through there...

Chandelier canopy project

Needed a wider piece of something - recalled seeing circles of wood at the hardware store.  Bought one & made a hole in it.

Ok, so the pipe fitting gets screwed into the wooden circle, but the wood is so rough.  Painted it? Cover it?

Chandelier canopy project

Yes spray it white & cover it with burlap!

Glued on the burlap.

Flipped it over & held with tape until the glue dried.

Removed the tape & finished off with a felt circle.  No one will see that of course, but I (we) would know…

Add some rough cut tacks for an organic look.

Now the pipe fitting was looking too gray.  Dry brush it with some paints.

Oh yes, much better!

Happy with the result & ready to hang, I call the electrician...

NO way I need one more part - the closed hook that the chain attaches to for hanging.

Chandelier canopy project

Oh for goodness sake will this project ever end??

I tell him I will go get one right now.  What is it called …"well, it is called a nipple."

Chandelier canopy project

Now I have to go to Home Depot and ask for a "nipple"?! I don't even like ordering chicken breasts at the butcher.

Whatever, this needs to get hung.  Off I go!

I got what I needed, didn't have to use the exact word & came home to spray paint my "nipple".

The electrician is coming back in the morning.  Would you say a little prayer "let there be light" for me?

To make a chandelier canopy like mine this is what you need:

  • an old chandy with missing parts!
  • a wooden round about 10" in diameter
  • a 3/4 metal pipe fitting with holes to screw it into the wood round
  • a "nipple" set - which is a bracket with a screw that fits into the hook
  • burlap or any fabric of your choice
  • glue
  • felt
  • tacks or nailheads if you desire.

Even thought this took an inordinate amount of time to accomplish, I am really happy with the result.

Have you ever had a project that just couldn't get done? Do share
