I love fall and if I had to pick one, I believe Thanksgiving might just be my favorite holiday.  Inclusive - a day to be grateful - and lots of food - that is my kind of holiday!

My celebration of fall begins at my front door.  After all,  you only get one chance at a first impression and that impression happens at the front door!

Five Steps to Fabulous Fall Front Door Decor

Follow my Five Steps to Fabulous Fall Front Door Decor and wow 'em this year!

  • Create foundation containers.  Containers that can stand alone & be the framework for seasonal displays.

  • Varying the height using steps or improvise with 'risers'.

  • Keep to a limited color palette.

  • Use a combination of plants and hardscape.

  • Remember to maintain with regular watering & deadheading of the flowering plants

Let's dive a little deeper in to the 5 steps...

Foundational Plants - So my front porch steps always look good without much effort, I have two large pots planted with 'foundational" plants'.  These can be thought of as the framework of the design.

My foundational plants are a green beauty boxwood and a cream de mint mock orange - both from Monrovia of course.

Even when the seasonal plants in the other pots fade, or I don't have time to add other plants, these container pots look great on their own.  They are single plant pots that require no special attention.  I suggest hardy green and variegated small shrubs for your foundational plants.

Vary the Heights - My house has steps leading to the porch so it is easy for me to vary the heights by placing & tucking in on the graduated steps.  This wasn't the case in my last house.  There I used all sorts of things as risers.

My favorite inexpensive riser is to turn the plastic nursery pot upside down and put a plant on top.  These are usually dark in color so fade into the design.

These nursery pots can also be easily cut down if they are too tall.  If they are exposed in your design, I wrap them in a piece of burlap & tuck the ends underneath inside the pots.

This time of year stacking pumpkins is also a terrific way to add height & interest to your design.  You can see both those ideas in action below at my former 'soulful home'.

5 Fall Ideas & Projects mysoulfulhome.com

Limited Color Palette - Listeners of my podcast, Decorating Tips & Tricks, know a limited color palette is key in so much of great design.  Same out in the garden and when decorating outdoors.

Creating a front porch or front door display is much like creating a vignette indoors.  A grouping in limited color palette makes for a cohesive look and bigger statement.

Use Hardscape - Another easy way to make your front porch/door design look great all the time is incorporating hardscape.  For me that means my lions.  I got a trio them years ago from Smith & Hawkin (Remember when they had stores? ~ I loved browsing there!)

The lions standing guard coupled with different container pots gives my design interest and texture before the plants even go into the mix.

Maintain - If you choose hardy evergreen foundational plants these container post will need very little more than water.  That being said, plants in containers require water more frequently than those in the ground.  They also benefit from a great potting soil like Good Dirt and occasional feeding.

If you are adding mums into your design for fall make sure that they are consistently moist, but not soggy.  They prefer cooler temperature and afternoon shade. Also, deadhead them as the the flowers fade for a re-bloom.

Hope you enjoyed me meeting you at the door today!  If you want to see my tables set for the season have a peek here for my Kitchen Reveal and my dining room ready for a fall dinner party from last year's Styled & Set tour.
